Partnerships for the Goals

A cultural event co-organized by the Embassy of Italy in Manila and Ateneo de Manila University

The Embassy of Italy in Manila and Ateneo de Manila University brought Giuseppe Verdi’s overtures and ballet music to Areté, Ateneo’s center for creativity and innovation, to promote classical music in the Philippines.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO), under the baton of Maestro Marlon Chen, performed Giuseppe Verdi’s opera music from I Vespri Sicilliani, La Forza del Destino, Giovanna d’Arco, Otello, Luisa Miller, Macbeth and Nabucco last 7 May 2023.

Verdi, whose compassionate gaze reveals his understanding of human nature and the intricacies of life, expressed powerful themes in his music such as nostalgia, love, nationalism, and faith.

More than a showcase and celebration of an Italian legacy, the event became an opportunity for attendees to appreciate the universal themes that Verdi's music embodies.

The show was well-received by an audience which included students, music enthusiasts, and members of the diplomatic community. It undoubtedly showcased the talents of MSO musicians and triumphantly highlighted the beauty and complexity of Verdi’s compositions.

Italian Ambassador to the Philippines Marco Clemente expressed his gratitude to the Ateneo for co-organizing the event and for the university's commitment to promoting, developing, and supporting cultural initiatives and programs.
