[AGS] Week of the Elderly

We often hear the saying “The children are the future.”  In the face of never-ending changes in the world and fast advances in technology, the youth are quicker to adapt.  They hold the future.  The older generation, on the other hand, may find it more challenging to keep up.   Despite that, let us remember that all the things that we know and enjoy today, all these technological advances, are products of the hard work of those who came before us.  They built the foundation.

The elderly hold the key to our history and culture. They pass on the knowledge and traditions that define our identity. With years of experience under their belts, they also serve as beacons that guide us to arrive at sound judgment and decisions through life challenges. They share tried, tested and improved life strategies rooted in valuable lessons learned from their rich experiences. They built the present for us to live in and we must continue to build on what they started to create an even better future. The challenge to the young generation is to create a future that caters not only to their own needs but also to that of the elderly.

Let us celebrate the Week of the Elderly by honoring their contributions to our community. We can show our appreciation with little acts of kindness like attentively listening to their stories of the past, walking at their pace & helping them carry heavy loads, patiently teaching them how to use new technologies, and spending quality time with them. Why don’t we start with the elderly closest and dearest to our hearts? Visit your grandparents or give them a call!

Every second Sunday of September, we celebrate Grandparents’ Day in the Philippines. This year, this special day falls on September 10th. How did you celebrate it with your Lolo and Lola?  You have the whole week to make them feel special.
