Over the years, plastic pollution has become a very serious global problem. In the Philippines alone, of the 61 million metric tons of waste produced daily, 24% is plastic! That is around 15 million tons of plastic waste generated every day! Many of these end up in the oceans. In fact, a 2019 study shows that the Philippines had the largest share in plastic wastes in the world!
It is time to take action before it is too late! How can we do this?
1. REFUSE single-use plastics. When going to the grocery or market, bring your own reusable container. When taking out food, bring your own baunan.
2. REUSE. Some plastics can be reused several times. Use packaging plastic bags again.
3. LESSEN CONSUMERISM. Buying new items may be satisfying, but constant manufacturing of new products
generates a lot of waste. Say no to the temptation of buying new items that are not really needed. Consider repairing broken items to avoid frequent purchases.
If we all make a conscious effort to lessen our plastic use, plastic waste could significantly decrease. Let us all be a plastic hero to make plastics zero!
