During the period from 18 to 2 March 2024, Vanessa Malapit MSc, the Head of Protection and Education at the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO), had the privilege of participating in the Trademark Training Course organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) through the IP Academy. This program was thoughtfully tailored to benefit both aspiring and established Trademark Agents and Attorneys and was conducted at the University of the Philippines (UP) Bonifacio Global City Campus.

The Philippines has witnessed a surge in trademark applications, reflecting the country's flourishing innovation and entrepreneurship. To meet this growing demand, the program aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of trademark law.

The intensive five-day program for Trademark Agents offered a deep dive into the Philippine trademark system. Key areas covered included:

Trademark Application and Registration

Participants gained a clear understanding of the filing process, ensuring smooth registration for their clients.

Trademark Maintenance

The course addressed crucial aspects of maintaining trademark protection throughout its validity period.

Classification Systems

Mastering international classification systems became a focus, as they are instrumental in accurate trademark registration and management.

Legal Framework and Enforcement

Participants explored the legal foundations of trademarks, including strategies for tackling infringement, dispute resolution, and enforcing trademark rights.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the program emphasized practical application. Led by established IP professionals, interactive workshops offered real-world scenarios and case studies. Participants engaged in simulations, tackling challenges faced by trademark practitioners today. This hands-on approach allowed them to immediately apply their newfound knowledge and hone practical skills.

The training received overwhelmingly positive feedback with participants lauding the program for its comprehensive content and the opportunity to develop practical skills directly applicable to their work. This successful edition has paved the way for future iterations. Those who missed the 2024 session can stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to enhance their skills and connect with the vibrant community of trademark professionals in the Philippines.
