AGS parents become students-for-a-day via Math seminar-workshop

05 Feb 2025 | By Annelle Leonor

“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.”  - Jane D. Hull

Parental involvement in a child’s school life can come in many forms. One example is for the father and/or mother to actually experience a class to gain a better understanding of what their child learns and then provide him/her with the necessary support.

To give our parents a better appreciation of the problem-solving classroom strategies that promote the development of our students’ mathematical thinking skills, the AGS Math Department held its second seminar-workshop for Grade 3 parents last 11 January 2025 from 9 am to 12 noon at Singson Hall. Entitled “Bar Model Seminar,” the session was facilitated by AGS Math Coordinator Mrs Grace Yn and Grade 3 Math teachers Ms Maria Margarita Madroño, Mrs Carissa Mortillero, and Mrs Rachelle Anne Suba. “Bar Model Seminar” focused on the use of the bar model method as a tool for solving word problems and was attended by around 70 parents.

The attendees were given an overview of the models presented during the first seminar-workshop and made to experience answering word problems similar to what their children are given in class in the 3rd and 4th Quarters. The parents were encouraged to go through a process of understanding each word problem and to come up with representations that would guide them in coming up with the right solution/s.  And just as it is in the classroom, the moms and dads - being the students for the day -  shared their solutions and answers with the group.

The Math seminar-workshop was a successful event with parents wanting more word problems to solve and looking forward to (hopefully) more workshops in the future. They left the event not only with a better appreciation for the strategies learned, but also with an even greater respect for the teachers’ patience and passion in educating their children.
