Ateneo strengthens regional collaboration on micro-credentials

Ateneo de Manila University is advancing micro-credentials in Southeast Asia through the MICROCASA project, an EU-funded initiative promoting lifelong learning and employability. Collaborating with universities from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Europe, Ateneo is shaping policies to integrate micro-credentials into higher education.

Leading the project for Ateneo are Dr Dennis Batangan (RGL-School of Social Sciences - Institute of Philippine Culture), Dr Marichi Guevarra (School of Humanities), and Mr Jacob Carpio (RGL-SOSS Institute of Philippine Culture)

MICROCASA: Driving Lifelong Learning

Launched in March 2023, MICROCASA includes 11 partner institutions, such as Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universitas Brawijaya, and European universities with expertise in quality assurance. The project has conducted a comparative study on micro-credential adoption in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, identifying standardization, quality assurance, and mutual recognition challenges.

Ateneo engages with government, industry, and international organizations to align micro-credentials with labor market needs. The project supports global agreements like the Tokyo Convention and ASEAN Quality Assurance Network (AQAN) initiatives for transparent recognition of qualifications.

Future of Micro-Credentials in Southeast Asia

With the rising demand for flexible learning, MICROCASA’s action plan focuses on university capacity-building, digital verification, and industry collaboration. Ateneo remains committed to fostering international partnerships to make micro-credentials a recognized asset for learners and employers.
