Waves of transformation: Embracing faith, nature, and community

18 Mar 2025 | Ignatian Spirituality Formation

The Alon at Araw overnight immersion in Zambales on 7 to 8 March 2025, organized by the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Ignatian Spirituality Formation, transcended a conventional retreat—it was a transformative journey deeply rooted in the spirit of Laudato Si' and the call to One-ing with God, Nature, and People. Set against the serene backdrop of a local beach in a vibrant fishing community in Cabangan, Zambales, every moment invited us to reconnect with the Earth, ourselves, and the fisherfolk who sustain it. This powerful immersion rekindled our sacred duty as stewards of God’s creation, inspiring us to adopt a more sustainable and compassionate way of living.

Our journey gained further depth when we met Gabi Del Rosario, a proud Batch 2018 AB Communications graduate from the Ateneo, and her partner, Don Quintos—visionaries behind the Alon at Araw Club, a dynamic non-profit organization and social enterprise. Their passion for surfing and football goes beyond traditional community programs, transforming these pursuits into innovative initiatives for personal growth, education, and environmental protection. By converting plastic waste into eco-lumbers and creating income-generating opportunities, they have seamlessly merged ecological stewardship with social innovation, demonstrating that sports and community engagement can build character, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to the greater good.

Reflecting on this immersive journey, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility in my personal and professional life. This experience has reshaped my perspective, inspiring me to weave together faith, environmental care, and innovative community engagement in everything I do. Witnessing the transformative interplay of faith, ecological care, and sports-driven innovation through the Alon at Araw Overnight Immersion has strengthened my resolve to continue to inspire my Ateneo students to follow a path of service. I am dedicated to guiding them to become faithful men and women for and with others—champions of human dignity, spiritual growth, and environmental sustainability.

United in service and solidarity,
