AGS teachers embrace nature and stewardship at Masungi Georeserve

30 Jun 2025 | Dharyl Bernardino, Alfie Cauilan, Aira San Antonio, Gersyd Cachola, Margo Cruz, and Isobel Del Rosario

On 10 June 2025, a group of Ateneo de Manila Grade School teachers and administrators had the incredible opportunity to discover the beautiful landscapes of Masungi Georeserve in Baras, Rizal. The visit was part of the Grade School’s GALAK (Gurong Atenista Lakbayin at Kilalanin) Pilipinas activity. Masungi Georeserve is a sanctuary for both wildlife and plants, including species endemic to the Philippines. It is also known for its breathtaking limestone formations, which are relics of the landscape's early history and are crucial to the ecosystem. Masungi is a protected area undergoing forestland rehabilitation and restoration, alongside efforts to conserve the region's rich biodiversity.

They courageously navigated the Discovery Trail, lined with rocks and concrete blocks, as well as hanging bridges and rope courses. In addition, Masungi offered them not just a physical adventure but a deep appreciation for nature. In this peaceful place, they enjoyed being close to nature. Surrounded by trees, fresh air, and beautiful views, they felt relaxed and calm. It was a quiet break from busy city life, helping them feel refreshed, recharged, and happy.

The trail began early in the morning with an orientation at the Silungan base, where they were introduced to the Masungi Georeserve’s history. Guided by the park rangers AJ, Jocelyn, Sajid, and Ren, they set off on the Discovery Trail. They also had close encounters with a diverse group of animals and plants that thrive within the place, including the 𝘏𝘺𝘱𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴, a snail species that is endemic to the site.

They genuinely appreciated visiting Yungib ni Ruben. The cave gave them a chance to see the amazing underground features formed by karst geology, like rock formations and natural chambers. It was both exciting and educational, helping them understand how nature shapes the land over time. They also weaved along suspended rope bridges and steel canopies, each step offering panoramic views of rolling hills, shimmering mountain peaks, and deep-green valleys. The visit left them inspired and deeply connected to the beauty of the natural world.

The experience has given them the honor of being nature's guests, further inspiring their commitment to be stewards of God's creation. The GALAK Masungi Georeserve experience has deepened their understanding of environmental conservation and the importance of protecting natural spaces. Ateneo Grade School will continue to support similar advocacies and take an active role in promoting biodiversity, sustainable tourism, and climate action.

All smiles
GALAK leaves AGS visitors inspired and deeply connected to the beauty of the natural world
