[AGS] Lent Season
23 Mar 2026
Lent is a solemn 40-day period in the Church’s liturgical calendar that invites the faithful into a journey of reflection, repentance, and renewal. Mirroring the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, Lent serves as a spiritual pilgrimage, urging us to give up daily distractions to focus on what truly matters. It is traditionally grounded in the three pillars of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, thus preparing our hearts to experience the joy of Christ's Resurrection at Easter.
In the Philippines, Lent is known as Kuwaresma. Filipino Catholics observe the season through vivid traditions characterized by a unique blend of solemnity and communal devotion, such as the Pabasa (the chanting of the Passion), Senakulo (plays depicting the Passion of Christ), and Visita Iglesia (the visiting of seven churches on Holy Thursday). These practices reflect the Filipino value of pakikiramay—sharing in Christ’s suffering—reflecting the deep-seated faith and resilience of the
Filipino spirit.
For a meaningful Lent, let’s turn our prayers and sacrifices into concrete acts of solidarity as persons for and with others.
