Grade 5 Bonding Event: a night of presence and promise

On 13 February 2026, the Ateneo Grade School conducted its much-anticipated Boys Bonding Night, titled “WonderBoy5: Recollecting Love, Reconnecting Strong Bonds.” Grade 5 students and their adult companions gathered for a meaningful evening that created lasting memories and strengthened relationships.
A Community Gathers
The afternoon began with warmth and hospitality. Teachers and parent volunteers welcomed families at the registration tables. Smiles, handshakes, and friendly squeezes of the shoulders filled the space.
Even before the formal program even began, something important was already taking place: a community was forming. In the simple acts of greeting, assisting, and preparing together, recollecting and reconnecting quietly unfolded long before the first cheer.
Building More Than Tents
Under the late afternoon sun, fathers and guardians knelt beside their sons and wards on the grounds, working together to pitch their tents, adjusting corners and steadying frames. Laughter filled the air as the Grade 5 students began what would later become one of their most memorable nights.
For these students on the threshold of their teenage years, the Boys Bonding Night was more than just a camping activity. It was a pause- a special break from hectic schedules. It was a night that reminded them that they are not growing up alone.
As Mr Robles gave his opening remarks, he invited several students to share what they loved about their companions. What started as a simple exchange soon became a touching moment. Several boys talked about how their fathers or companions spend time with them- helping them with homework, playing basketball after school or simply listening to them at the end of a very busy day.
Their responses revealed not only the boys’ love for their fathers and guardians, but also their growing awareness of how love is expressed through guidance, sacrifice, and presence.
The Community is Welcomed
By dusk, all gathered in the Covered Courts. Fr Vic de Jesus SJ, the AGS chaplain, set the tone for the evening. He gently reminded parents and guardians of their vital duty: to daily pray for their sons and wards, to bless them, and to entrust them to God.
He then invited each pair to hug one another — a simple yet powerful gesture of affection. Across the courts, arms wrapped around shoulders, heads leaned close, and some eyes sparkled. Those who witnessed the quiet moment were deeply moved by the love shared between the adults and the boys.
Energy, Laughter, and Shared Joy
Following the heartwarming speeches, the Covered Courts soon filled with spirited cheers, energetic games, and contagious excitement. Fathers or guardians and their sons ran side by side in relays, encouraging one another with enthusiasm as friendly competition echoed throughout the courts.
A special musical performance by father-son duo Daddy Onyx and Yosef Culala, joined by Kiel Co of 5-Ati, reminded everyone that joy is also an essential part of bonding. The adult companions who joined the games prepared by the PE Department showed admirable resilience and sportsmanship. The young ones followed closely—not only learning how to win or lose, but also how to show up, cheer, and support one another.
Listening with the Heart
The atmosphere soon shifted to a quieter pace. Letters were handed out, and soft music was played in the background. Hugs were exchanged as fathers and guardians and their sons read the messages they had lovingly written to one another.
Through these written words, gratitude deepened, misunderstandings softened, and hopes for the future were quietly shared. The moment reminded everyone present that sometimes, the most meaningful conversations begin on a simple sheet of paper.
Standing Together
Once the program ended, everyone returned to their tents to spend more time together. Some played basketball, others walked around the campus grounds, while a few continued their heart-to-heart conversations beside their tents. These were the organic moments—the ones that often stay in memory the longest.
By dawn, the grounds slowly came back to life. Tents were taken down, trash was picked up, and there was a collective effort to restore the space. The Boys Bonding Night ended as it had begun: with shared responsibility.
A Night That Will Linger
WonderBoy5 was more than just an event on the school calendar. It was a reminder that growth often happens through shared effort, shared laughter, and shared connection.
The night will carry memories of pitching a tent together, running side by side in a relay, and simply spending valuable time with someone they look up to. In these moments, the boys quietly carry the promise that they are not alone as they continue to grow into the young men they are meant to be.
