The certification program, including a “privacy mark” aims to help companies build up their reputations for protecting privacy.

NEWS | Webhosting database exposed over 800M records online

PHILIPPINES — US-based web host, DreamHost, left its database unsecured exposing over 800M records online. The database had information on DreamHost users as well as information on WordPress accounts hosted or installed on DreamHost’s server. The exposed records revealed usernames, display names, and emails for WordPress accounts.

PHILIPPINES — The House of Representatives – Committee on Information and Communications Technology approved a substitute bill that aims to give the country’s data privacy law more teeth in the enforcement function amid the rapid digital transformation. Redefining sensitive personal information and adding the performance of a contract as a new criterion to lawfully process sensitive personal information are among the proposed amendments to the law.

PHILIPPINES — 700M LinkedIn user data are up for sale on a hacker forum with a sample of 1 million records. The Professional networking platform however, denied reports of a data breach and claimed that it was a data scraping operation. Reports showed that information in the free samples includes full names, gender, email addresses, phone numbers, and industry information.

NEWS | PhilSys Act ensures the security of PhilID cardholders info

PHILIPPINES —The Philippine Statistics Authority guaranteed that the data of PhilSys-registered persons are amply protected under the PhilSys Act. It made clear that the law prohibits any person from disclosing, collecting, recording, conveying, disseminating, publishing, or using any information of PhilSys registered persons. It further confirmed that records of a PhilID cardholder are kept private unless given consent by the holder and in identified circumstances as provided under the PhilSys Act.
