NEWS | London University targeted by hackers
13 Jul 2021

LONDON – A University in London has been a target of Iranian hackers. This came after Proofpoint, a cybersecurity company, accused the latter of impersonating academics at the London’s School of Oriental and African studies (SOAS). The National Cyber Security Centre warned that the hackers are using cyber strategies to sabotage and steal from UK institutions. In the case of SOAS, by impersonating the school via fake emails, asking professors, journalists and Middle east experts to attend conferences and discussions. READ HERE

NEWS | PNP claims data privacy was prioritized in bodycam use

PHILIPPINES – The Philippine National Police (PNP) defended and claimed that the use of body-worn cameras has its mechanisms in place for data management and privacy. This came after the Commission on Human Rights expressed some wary over the implications that came with the technology. According to the PNP Chief, privacy was given primary importance in the crafting and issuance of guidelines on the use body-worn cameras. READ HERE
 

NEWS | Ransomware attack hits New Zealand kindergartens
5 Jul 2021

NEW ZEALAND – The Free Kindergarten Association Whānau Manaaki confirmed that 100 kindergartens are affected by a ransomware attack. This came after the IT management software Kaseya which they are using was hit by the said attack. The attackers claim that they infected more than a million systems stealing data and encrypting it. As a precaution, several schools have shut down their services and stopped using the system for the meantime. READ HERE
 

NEWS | Use of cross-border data tools pushed

PHILIPPINES – The National Privacy Commission (NPC) encourages local companies to use tools that can integrate data management and cross-border transfer standards across Southeast Asia. The Commission recommended employing the Model Contract Clauses (MCC) and Data Management Framework (DMF). According to the NPC, these standards and framework provide for protection of data’s confidentiality, integrity and availability. READ HERE
