NEWS | Class action lawsuit filed against SU over data breach

UNITED STATES – A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sycarus University for negligence (i.e., inadequate cybersecurity protocols and poor staff training). It comes in the wake of a data breach that exposed the names and Social Security Numbers of nearly 10,000 students, alumni, and applicants. A university employee fell victim to a phishing attack and exposed their credentials.

NEWS | Private information of 2,841 students accidentally made public

CANADA – A recent report by the Saskatchewan information and privacy commissioner’s office reveals that the records of 2,841 students were accidentally made public last year. The Chinook School Division said the breach was caused by human error. An IT worker of the school division unintentionally transferred computer code containing the student files from a private account to a public account.

NEWS | PH students and educators assess the advantages of online learning

MANILA – A new study commissioned by Lenovo and Microsoft asked nearly 3,400 students, parents and educators for their assessment of e-learning since the pandemic. Apparently, students and parents prioritize security (50%), privacy (52%), flexible performance (26%) and continuous value (29%), in that order. Educator were also interested in education-specific security (75%) and data privacy (79%).

NEWS | NY School District's Facial recognition system remains on hold

UNITED STATES – A case filed by the New York Civil Liberties Union against Lockport City School District to prevent the latter’s facial recognition-capable camera surveillance system has been dismissed. According to the court, a recently-passed law temporarily barring the use of such technology in schools made any further legal action unnecessary.

NEWS | Delhi educators file suit against attendance app over privacy fears

INDIA – Teachers have been told to install an attendance app on their phones. According to city authorities, their wages could be withheld if they fail to comply.
