Ateneo Releases Internal Audit of its Solid Waste Management System

Quezon City, Philippines — The Ateneo de Manila University has released its internal audit of the amount of solid waste generated within its campus.

Following the successful implementation of solid waste segregation, a primer showing the kinds and percentages of solid waste coming from within the Loyola Schools. These include kitchen waste, PET plastic, glass, garden waste, metal, laminates, wet and dry paper, and uncategorized materials. According to the CFMO, garden waste accounts for 22% of the Loyola Schools' total solid waste.

Based on the internal audit, it was also found that a majority of the solid waste stream is composed of different forms of plastics. Polystyrene is the biggest contributor at 43.3%, as it can be found in various single-use packaging.

Continuing the segregation of waste into the current categories — Compostables, Recyclables, Dry Paper, Other Waste, and E-Waste — will also allow the Campus Facilities Management Office (CFMO) to further track any increase or decrease in volume for future consideration.
