ASOG Associate Professor and BOSES Pilipinas Convenor Featured in TV5 and ANC

24 Nov 2021

Dr. Deinla

On 18 November 2021, Dr. Imelda Deinla, Associate Professor of ASOG and Convenor of BOSES Pilipinas, was featured in TV5's Ted Failon and DJ Cha Cha sa Radyo Singko and ANC News' Top Story to share the results gathered from the Pinoy Voters’ Vibe: Youth Edition survey. In the second round, only 38% Filipino college students received a high score in the quiz.

The survey aims to verify empirically the capacity of Filipino college students to detect fake and real news through a fake news quiz. It is not commissioned by an external source. Dr. Deinla emphasized that this was launched by the Ateneo school of Government which, as a public policy school, conducts research to aid in policy making and analyze relevant issues.

In the second round, only 38% Filipino college students received a high score in the quiz. The study finds that trust in Facebook and social media and support for President Duterte are associated with lower quiz scores while voter likelihood and trust in mainstream media are associated with higher scores.

Social media, especially Facebook, is vulnerable to fake news since anyone can upload their statements online. Dr. Deinla emphasized that the spread of fake news is often backed by concerted and well-funded disinformation networks with political goals. She warned that this could potentially determine the course of the upcoming elections with the expected proliferation of disinformation that could misinform voters when choosing their candidates.

Dr. Deinla noted that the cure for disinformation requires a whole-of-nation approach. She recommends that citizens start with themselves by assessing their own ability. “What the Fake?”, a web app developed by the Ateneo School of Government, is a diagnostic tool to test one’s ability to detect fake news and illustrate identifiers that can help detect fake news in the future.
