Kritika Kultura welcomes Carlos M. Piocos III to its international board of editors

Kritika Kultura, the refereed electronic journal of literary, cultural, and language studies of the Ateneo de Manila University, welcomes scholar and poet, Carlos M. Piocos III, to its International Board of Editors.

 

At De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines, Dr. Piocos is a professor of literary and cultural studies in the Department of Literature, an associate for poetry and cultural studies in the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center, a research fellow in the Southeast Asia Research Center and Hub, and managing editor of Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance. 

 

Dr. Piocos writes about cinema, writing, diaspora, and social movements. His most recent publications include Narratives, Affect and Politics of Southeast Asian Migration (2021) and Mga Bantay-Salakay sa Loob ng Aking Bahay (2020). The latter is an anthology of select Indonesian migrant women’s fiction, which he edited and translated into Filipino. He has articles in Journal of Population and Social Studies; International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare; Asia Pacific Social Science Review; Mental Health, Religion & Culture; Feminist Media Studies; Humanities Diliman; and Plaridel: A Philippine Journal of Communication, Media, and Society. In Kritika Kultura, he published “Why Mourning Matters: The Politics of Grief in Southeast Asian Narratives of Women’s Migration” (2019). He was also a lecturer during the Kritika Kultura Lecture Series in honor of Edel E. Garcellano (2021).

 

Dr. Piocos has two poetry collections thus far: Corpus (2010) and Kung ang Siyudad ay Pag-ibig (2019). The former gathers his poems from Corpus and Guerra Cantos, which respectively won the first prize for poetry in Filipino during the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards in 2007 and in 2010.

 

As member of Kritika Kultura International Board of Editors, Carlos M. Piocos III joins scholars Jan Baetens (Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven, BE), Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao (Bryant University, US), Joel David (Inha University, KR), Michael Denning (Yale University, US), Faruk (Universitas Gadjah Mada, ID), Regenia Gagnier (University of Exeter, GB), Leela Gandhi (Brown University, US), Inderpal Grewal (Yale University, US), Peter Horn (University of the Witwatersrand, ZA), Anette Horn (University of the Witwatersrand, ZA), David Lloyd (University of California, Riverside, US), Rajeev S. Patke (Yale NUS College, SG), Vicente L. Rafael (University of Washington, US), Vaidehi Ramanathan (University of California, Davis, US), Temario Rivera (University of the Philippines, PH), E. San Juan, Jr. (Philippine Studies Center, US), Neferti X.M. Tadiar (Columbia University, US), and Antony Tatlow (Trinity College Dublin, IE).

 

“Dr. Piocos’s diverse strengths, particularly in diaspora studies, translation, Southeast Asian studies, and poetry will help consolidate and extend our journal’s capacity in these areas,” says Kritika Kultura editor in chief, Dr. Vincenz Serrano. “We look forward to working together with Dr. Piocos and realizing our shared goals in scholarship and creative work.”
