UNITED KINGDOM – A spreadsheet containing the personal data of students of the University of Essex was inadvertently attached to an email sent by the facilities management to an accommodation block. It contained student IDs, birthdates, and contact details of more than 400 students. The University already informed and offered advice and assistance to the affected students.  READ MORE

NEWS: Human rights groups ask Zoom to drop emotion tracking software plans

UNITED STATES – Nearly thirty human rights organizations penned a letter to Zoom calling on the company to cease the development of any software aimed at analyzing users’ engagement and sentiment. The letter comes in response to reports of Zoom beginning to roll out post-meeting sentiment analysis for hosts. The groups state that the move to mine users’ emotional data is discriminatory, manipulative, punitive, and a data security risk. READ MORE

NEWS: NPC conducts on-site compliance checks with PICs and PIPs

PHILIPPINES – The National Privacy Commission announced that it has already begun conducting on-site compliance checks for public and private entities to ensure that they meet the requirements of the Data Privacy Act of 2012. Entities that have undergone said compliance checks include media entities, hotels, courier services, schools, government entities, and local government units.

NEWS: NPC to support international certification system for data protection

PHILIPPINES – The National Privacy Commission (NPC) will be supporting the establishment of an international certification system that will allow interoperability among various jurisdictions with different data protection rules. NPC, along with the members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Cross-Border Privacy Rules (APEC CBPR) system, is setting up a Global CBPR Forum to allow private and public entities to work together in ensuring that cross-border transfers happen in accordance with standards prescribed by the system.
