NEWS | Use of fingerprint scanners in Sydney school’s toilets an invasion of privacy

AUSTRALIA – To monitor student mobility and deter damage, Moorebank High School decided to put fingerprint scanners at the entrance of its restrooms. Nearly all of its students have already given their fingerprint data. Despite its use not being required, the system is described by a privacy expert as still posing hazards that outweigh any potential benefits. READ HERE   

 

NEWS |FBI and DHS join probe into massive school cyberattack

UNITED STATES – A cyberattack on the Los Angeles Unified School District that utilized a “ransomware tool” disabled computer systems, preventing staff and students from accessing their emails. The systems used by teachers to publish lessons and record attendance were also down. The district’s website was also knocked down. READ HERE

 

NEWS | Student detained for hacking Exams Dept website

SRI LANKA– A student was arrested for hacking the Department of Examinations’ official website to retrieve data on the 2021 GCE Advanced Level Examination results and displayed them on a separate web portal. Data pertaining to nearly 270,000 pupils were affected. READ HERE

 

NEWS | Tax fraud ring leader selling children's stolen identities, jailed

UNITED KINGDOM – Ariel Jimenez, owner of a fraudulent tax preparation business, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for selling the stolen identities of thousands of children on welfare and assisting “clients” in filing false tax credits, causing tens of millions of dollars in tax loss. NEWS | Scam texts that know phone users’ names raise alarm

PHILIPPINES – A new type of SMS scam has raised concerns about a potential data breach, or at least a cybersecurity threat. This time, anonymous messages that make their way to people’s phones mention the actual name of the recipients. The National Privacy Commission theorizes that it may have something to do with a well-known e-wallet platform. READ HERE
