RK joins World College Radio Day

At a time of rapid change in media and how people consume information, what role does radio play? Perhaps Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM is a testament to the enduring power of the spoken word passing through invisible waves.

For the 4th year, Radyo Katipunan (RK) joins World College Radio Day (WCRD), a 24 hour global marathon. More than 600 stations from 40 countries across 6 continents unite on Friday, 7 October 2022.

Among the participants from the Philippines, Radyo Katipunan from Ateneo de Manila stands out after receiving the 2020 Spirit of College Radio Award. It bested over 600 participants and plans to continue trailblazing in 2022 and beyond.

What can you expect from WCRD? Along with other participating radio stations, RK expects to start rousing conversations and engaging dialogues on this year’s theme, “Voices for Peace.”

Unexpectedly, college radio is taking on the role of raising awareness of sustainable peace, touching on issues including oppression, violence, and injustice.

To further the cause, WCRD has named Julian Lennon, son of The Beatles Legend, John Lennon, as its ambassador. The UNESCO Peace Laureate explains why the theme resonates with him: “I feel I’ve been pretty successful in promoting peace and trying to motivate people through so many mediums, but we’ve got to keep moving, we’ve got to keep changing, we’ve got to do better!”

Listen in as Radyo Katipunan joins World College Radio Day, led by Maxine Cruz, host of RK’s pop culture show “New Wave,” and Teo Ricaforte, RK’s digital media coordinator. We stream live on fb.com/radyokatipunan and youtube.com/radyokatipunanfm, as well as 87.9 FM and zeno.fm/rk879fm.
