New literary publication of renowned Philippine-studies scholar Soledad S. Reyes, The Ravaged World, now available from Ateneo University Press

The Ravaged World: The Short Fiction of Rosario de Guzman-Lingat, translated from the Filipino by Soledad S. Reyes is now available from the Ateneo University Press. Building on the success of The Locked Door and Other Stories (Ateneo University Press, 2017), this book offers insight into the varied experiences of postwar society through short-story form.

In The Ravaged World, author Rosario de Guzman-Lingat explores the seemingly ordinary lives of her characters as they navigate the everyday. From a tormented veteran reduced to a peanut vendor doubting the worth of the war he fought, to a young activist putting his faith in people who take advantage of his patriotic fervor, and a jeepney driver whose decision challenges his notion of generosity and forgiveness, these stories delve deep into the human psyche.

Selected and translated by renowned Philippine-studies scholar Soledad S. Reyes, The Ravaged World is a testament to the important place of women in Tagalog literature. Rosario de Guzman-Lingat wrote a large number of novels and short stories for the country's most popular magazines in the 1960s and 1970s. Working within the limitations of popular fiction, Lingat nonetheless succeeded in constructing narratives that shed light on the experiences of the postwar generation: family discord, psychological breakdowns due to both personal and societal traumas, the impact of the Pacific War, a deeply divided nation, and the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated world.

Soledad S. Reyes, who has written the literary biography Rosario de Guzman-Lingat (1924-1997): The Burden of Self and History, edited several anthologies of Lingat’s short stories in Filipino, and translated Lingat’s novels Ang Balabal ng Diyos (The Cloak of God), and Ano Ngayon, Ricky (What Now, Ricky?), has once again demonstrated her mastery of translation with this latest work.

The Ravaged World promises to be a thought-provoking and poignant addition to Philippine literature, and is not to be missed by readers of the works of Rosario de Guzman-Lingat and Soledad S. Reyes, and scholars of Philippine studies.
