Uyheng, Roxas, and Herras win Asian Association of Social Psychology's Misumi Award
22 May 2023
Congratulations to Joshua Uyheng, Gilana Roxas, and Martina Herras on receiving the Asian Association of Social Psychology Misumi Award for their article, "Veiled apologetics and insurgent nostalgia: Sociogenesis of contested memories of the Marcos dictatorship", published in the Asian Journal of Social Psychology. The paper was selected for its contribution to social psychology in Asia, among all the articles published in the journal in 2021.
The paper examines how martial law in the Philippines is socially represented in both formal school textbooks and informal social media comments, and revealed that textbook representations adopt a framework of balanced reportage that frames human rights abuses as comparable with economic and infrastructure programs, whereas, social media representations highlight the use of nostalgia to mythologize martial law by criticizing the political present.
Joshua Uyheng is a research associate at the Department of Psychology and Co-Director of the Political Psychology of Democratization Lab; Gilana Roxas is part-time faculty of the Department of Psychology and consultant at the Ateneo Bulatao Center; Martina Herras is an Ateneo alumna and currently a civil society researcher focused on communication, human rights, and climate.
