Partnerships for the Goals

The Office of the Dean of the School of Social Sciences joins the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Department of Economics in proudly congratulating Dr Jose Jowel P Canuday (Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology) and Mr Joselito T Sescon (Assistant Professor, Department of Economics) for receiving the 2023 OUTSTANDING BOOK/MONOGRAPH AWARD from the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) for their book:

TRANSFIGURING MINDANAO: A MINDANAO READER
Canuday, J J P  and Sescon, J T (ed) (2022)
Ateneo de Manila University Press

1

The Mindanao Reader is a hefty volume of 34 chapters written by 44 authors from transdisciplinary fields based in, working on, and with roots from Mindanao. The authors include academic and religious scholars, journalists, rights and environmental activists, cultural bearers and leaders, and artists.

Authors from Ateneo de Manila University are: Erik Akpedonu (Institute of Philippine Culture/Department of Fine Arts), Patricia Irene Dacudao (Department of History), Ryan Joseph Dizon (Department of Economics), Estelle Marie Ladrido (Department of Communication/Areté), Joseph Lim (Department of Economics), Marjorie Muyrong (Department of Economics), Czarina Saloma (School of Social Sciences), Luz Rimban (Ateneo Center for Journalism/Department of Communication), and Philip Arnold Tuano (Department of Economics/Ateneo School of Government).

Fr Roberto C Yap, SJ, Ateneo de Manila University President, wrote the book's foreword.

The Mindanao Reader was conceived in response to the long-standing call for an expansion of scholarship on Mindanao, and to assist in carrying out efforts of the Society of Jesus in bolstering service to the region. In producing the book, the faculty and staff of the School of Social Sciences collectively worked in solidarity with fellow academics, community leaders, and knowledge bearers in Mindanao to contribute to the broader endeavors of addressing historical issues of marginality, inequality, injustices, and neglect confronting the area.

The book project, including the requisite author conferences, was funded by a generous grant from the Commission on Higher Education and The Asia Foundation under the stewardship of the Ateneo de Manila School of Social Sciences.

The awardees will personally accept the award and attend the Academy's two-day Annual Scientific Meeting in person on 12 to 13 July 2023 at a venue within Metro Manila.
