2023 THE Asia Rankings: Ateneo ranked 84th top university in Asia
23 Jun 2023
Ateneo de Manila University is ranked 84 in its debut appearance in the the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings, the United Kingdom-based group revealed Thursday, 22 June 2023.
The University is the highest-ranked Philippine institution and the only one in the top 100, the rankings revealed.
Similar to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Asia University Rankings also judge “research-intensive universities” across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. For this, the ranking’s weightings have been recalibrated to reflect “the priorities of Asian institutions.”
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).
Ateneo had the following scores:
- Overall Score: 47.4
- Teaching: 38.3
- Citations: 97.0
- Industry Income: 37.6
- International Outlook: 31.8
- Research: 11.6
"We are honored to enter Times Higher Education's Asia rankings for the first time, especially being ranked in the top 100," said Fr Roberto Yap SJ, President.
"This feat is the product of years of hard work of the entire community -- from faculty and researchers, to staff, professionals, and administrators, to our students," Yap said. "This only encourages us to further work on our shared mission to engage with society to affect positive change in the world."
Previously, Ateneo de Manila appeared in the rankings with a “reporter status,” meaning that the institution was active in the ranking process despite not being ranked. For this year, four Philippine institutions were ranked, while six were included as "reporters." A total of 669 institutions, representing 31 territories, were included in the 2023 table.
This month, another university ranking table released by Times Higher Education—the THE Impact Rankings, which measures and assesses universities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—revealed that Ateneo is still the top Philippine institution for 2023. For THE’s World University Rankings, Ateneo de Manila was ranked in the 351–400 bracket in its debut last year.
