The Office for Social Concern and Involvement honored its partners on-site last Saturday, 17 June 2023, in a hybrid recognition day that saw over 150+ face-to-face attendees and 50+ online attendees across the 102 partner organizations and areas. The event took place in Leong Hall. This came at the end of the school year 2022-2023; the same school year that saw the gradual return of physical classes and activities after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

From non-governmental organizations, to schools, to people’s organizations, to government sectors, etc., the guests in attendance, whom OSCI and the Loyola schools students interacted and worked with, spanned across several different sectors (elderly, education, PWDs, transportation, environment, etc.). A full list (alphabetical) of the partners can be found at the bottom of this article.

Partners in formation

Jaime Evangelista (former president of Ugnayan Ng Mga Mamamayan at Mangingisda ng Rizal, UGMMARIZ) and members of UGMMARIZ are one of several partner areas honored. (L-R) Ophalle Alzona-Pornela (Director, Office for Social Concern and Involvement, ADMU), Lino Rivera (Vice President for Mission Integration, ADMU) and  Leland Joseph Dela Cruz (Assistant Vice President for Social Development, Environment, and Community Engagement, ADMU) presented the certificates to them on behalf of the university.

Mr. Lino Rivera (Vice President for Mission Integration, Ateneo de Manila University) and Dr. Leland Joseph Dela Cruz (Assistant Vice President for Social Development, Environment, and Community Engagement, Ateneo de Manila) both expressed their gratitude for all the area partners in attendance in their remarks.

“Naging mabunga ang pakikipagtungo ng mga estudiyante sa inyo kahit na ito’y sa pamamagitan ng online… Alam naman namin na hindi talaga namin kayo papakawalan, hindi namin papakawalan itong karanasan ng mga estudyante na makipag-usap, makipagtungo sa inyo,” Dr. Dela Cruz shared, as he especially thanked and acknowledged everyone for finding ways to navigate the work and interaction they would have with students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dahil napakahalaga nito para sa amin at para sa aming mga estudyante… Ang tinuturo ninyo ay hindi lamang konsepto o teorya kundi totoong buhay, totoong karanasan ninyo sa inyong pamayanan, sa inyong mga institusyon. Kaya kayo talaga ang mga guro ng mga estudyante sa karanasang ito,” he added.

Mr. Jaime Evangelista, former president of Ugnayan Ng Mga Mamamayan at Mangingisda ng Rizal, UGMMARIZ and one of the partners honored, also shared his experience working with OSCI and the university’s students for over a decade and thanked them afterwards. “Isang malaking bagay sa amin na hindi makakalimutan na kami ay binigyan ng panahon at binigyan kami ng karapatan ng OSCI na sila ay aming maging kabalikat,” he shared.

Face-to-face moving forward

As the move of the University to go fully face-to-face continues to take form, students will continue to interact and work with the various partner areas and organizations through its formation programs in partnership with different academic departments. Specifically, these programs are: the Binhi Program (in partnership with the Department of Psychology and Department of Sociology and Anthropology for SocSc11) for first year, the NSTP11-Punla Program (in partnership with the Department of Theology for Theo12) for second year, and the NSTP12-Bigkis Program (in partnership with the Development Studies Program for SocSc13 and across different home departments for service-learning) for third year. OSCI and the University will continue to make preparations for the ongoing school year 2023-2024.
