Dr Julio C Teehankee presents paper on political dynasties and development in APISA 2023

On 30 June 2023, Dr Julio C Teehankee presented the article entitled “Interrogating the Links between Dynasties and Development in the Philippines” at the APISA 2023 17th Annual Congress held in Bali, Indonesia. Dr Teehankee is the Chief of Party of Participate PH, a non-partisan, pro-democracy coalition for political participation in the country, and an esteemed scholar of political dynasties in the Philippines.
Co-authored with Dr Ronald U Mendoza, Dean Philip Arnold P Tuano, Gabrielle Ann S Mendoza, and Jurel Yap, the article develops a typology of Philippine provinces to illustrate different development trajectories based on political power concentration, elite ownership over local businesses, and business dynamism. Policymakers, development partners, and scholars are then encouraged to address unique development constraints by matching programmatic interventions with certain contexts. This can help mitigate inequality in development opportunities across provinces as well as promote a holistic view of development that is sensitive to political and economic conditions.
The forthcoming article is part of a special issue on political dynasties to be published by the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics. To know more about the research conducted by the Ateneo Policy Center, see: https://www.ateneo.edu/asog/ateneo-policy-center/research-materials/working-papers
