Martial law in the Philippines: Lessons & Legacies, 1972-2022 featured in MIBF 2023 event

18 Sep 2023

MIBF 2023

On September 14 2023, the Ateneo University Press held the event ‘The Missing Link in Martial Law Literature’ at the opening day of the Manila International Book Fair 2023. Throughout the discussion, the speakers reflected on the shortcomings in the information campaign for the truth, lessons to be learned from how we remember our history, and the possible implications of another Marcos as a president in the Philippines.

The event featured the title Martial Law in the Philippines: Lessons and Legacies, 1972-2022. Edited by Senior Research Fellow Dr. Edilberto de Jesus and Ateneo Policy Center Head Ms. Ivyrose S. Baysic of the Ateneo School of Government, the book traces the current governance challenges and societal pulse of the Philippines to the legacy of the Marcos dictatorship and post-EDSA recovery period. It covers a wide range of topics from culture, political economy, and national security to the unique experiences of the Tsinoy community, the urban poor, and indigenous peoples.

Professor Melissa Lao of the Department of Political Science, co-author of the chapter ‘Election Reform and the Prospects of Voter Engagement in the Philippines: 1972-2022’, and Ateneo Policy Center Research Associate Gaby Mendoza, co-author of the chapter entitled ‘Cronyism, oligarchy, and economic governance in the Philippines: 1970s vs. 2020s’, joined the panel to discuss their perspectives on Martial Law.
