Join the Forum for Super8 Cinema and Moving Image happening at the Ateneo Art Gallery this November 10 – 11

02 Nov 2023

Super 8 Forum

Join the very first Forum for Super8 Cinema and Moving Image happening on November 10 – 11 at the Ateneo Art Gallery, with featured talks on the history of Philippine alternative cinema and the relevance of the Super8 Camera. These will be led by filmmakers Nick Deocampo, Raymond Red, and forum proponents Erwin Romulo and Jun Sabayton. The program closes with a performance by filmmaker and visual artist Roxlee wherein participants are invited to join in on creating a communal film.

The forum is open to the public and free of charge with registration required at https://go.ateneo.net/Super82023.

As the first of its kind, the forum aims to be a platform to promote Philippine alternative cinema and broaden the reach of its practice to today’s audiences, especially to young filmmakers. The forum intends to touch on more topics and projects in the future, with plans of following a biennial schedule moving forward.

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

DAY 1 | 10 November 2023, Friday, 3:00 pm

1983: Brave New World

A talkback with directors Nick Deocampo and Raymond Red as they discuss the 1983 Manila Short Film Festival, where landmark works such as Deocampo’s “Oliver” (1983) and Red’s “Ang Magpakailanman” (1982) premiered, and its significance in the history of Philippine alternative cinema.

DAY 2 | 11 November 2023, Saturday, 2:00 pm onwards

The Medium is Super8

An introduction to Super 8mm Cinema by filmmakers Jun Sabayton and Jess Ed, wherein they discuss the relationship between experimental films to the camera and process, and how its limitations have inspired a range of artists' works, from documentary to animation, narrative and non-narrative, and even archival and contemporary.

Tronong Pula: Make Film Not War

A ritual performed by artist Roxlee in which the community is invited to create a communal film. Co-presented by The Unconfined Cinema and with support from the Areté, this marks the fourth iteration from a series with “Tronong Puti” (1983), “Tronong Ginto” (2001), and “Arinola” (2023).
