In a remarkable achievement, John Benedict Du, an MS in electronics engineering (EcE) alumnus, was honored with the Best Presenter Award at the International Conference on Advances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (ICAEEE) 2023 held hybrid in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia on 15–16 November 2023.
Du, whose advisers and co-authors are Dr Gian Paolo T Mayuga and Engr Maria Leonora C Guico, faculty members of the Department of Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering (ECCE), presented their research on the "Performance evaluation and integration of distortion mitigation methods for fisheye video object detection." The award-winning work delved into the persistent challenge of distortion in fisheye cameras, exploring innovative techniques to mitigate this issue and enhance the accuracy and speed of object detection algorithms. The research not only provided a comprehensive evaluation of distortion mitigation methods but also presented an optimized configuration for video object detection, leading to the development of a desktop application for real-time object detection and tracking.
Universiti Teknologi MARA organized the event, bringing together experts from various tracks, including artificial intelligence, control of intelligent systems and robotics, cybersecurity, communication technology, industrial electronics and applications, renewable energy technologies and issues, smart technology and systems, and more. Du's research work was presented under the artificial intelligence track.
