Ateneo de Manila Senior High School students Lance Abarquez (11-Wright) and Jessy Manuel (12-Oldcorne) won medal awards for the Philippines in the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) Final Round 2023, which was held onsite in Hong Kong and online on August 26, 2023. Lance won a silver award in the senior secondary group category while Jessy bagged bronze for the same division.
The HKIMO Final Round 2023 attracted more than 2000 participants from countries such as Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Approximately 800 of them competed onsite while around 1300 participated online. This year’s medalists won 117 golds, 159 silvers, and 175 bronzes across the HKIMO’s 10 age groups.
The HKIMO provides a platform for pupils with a strong interest in mathematics, and is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. It is different from other math Olympiads in that it offers standardized topics such as Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry and Combinatorics. Its goals are to stimulate and foster young people’s interest in learning mathematics, strengthen their creative thinking, and widen their international perspective.
