ASHS students win top awards in 4 Model United Nations conferences

Four members of the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School’s Model United Nations org- Fran Ching (11-Goupil), Nala Vanguardia (12-Acquaviva), Leanne Wang (12-Bobola) and Wendy Yao (11-Gavan) – have won a string of awards and accolades in competitions held between August 2023 and January 2024.
Most recently, in the 2nd LIFE Model United Nations held last month, Wendy Yao was named Best Delegate (1st place out of 20) while Fran Ching received the awards for 2nd Most Outstanding Delegate (2nd place) and Best Position Paper. Wendy was the delegate of Jordan in the United Nations Committee on Drugs and Crime, while Fran was the delegate of Gabon in the African Union.
Held on 21 January 2024 at MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, the LIFE competition attracted students from DLS-IS Senior High, Xavier School, Miriam College, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, and DLS- College of Saint Benilde.
In the 3rd Assumption College Model United Nations held from 12-14 January, Leanne Wang was named Best Delegate (1st place out of 90) as the delegate of the Philippines in the International Committee of the Red Cross. She bested students from MGC New Life Academy, DLS-IS Senior High, Xavier School, and Miriam College in the tournament that was held onsite at Assumption College in Makati.
Late last year, in the 10th TOGETHER Model United Nations Korea tournament held online from November 25-26, Fran Ching won the award for Best Position Paper, besting 89 other competitors from schools like Chadwick International, Raffles Girls’ School, De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde, Korea University and Korea International School. Fran competed as the delegate of Pakistan under the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee.
In August 2023, in the NEXUS Model United Nations Conference 2023 held online from August 19-20, Nala Vanguardia was named 2nd Most Outstanding Delegate (out of 20), as the delegate of Ecuador in the International Monetary Fund.
Among the other participating schools were Tzu Chi Secondary School Jakarta, British School Manila, Anglo-Chinese School (Singapore), Hwa Chong Institution, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, and University of Brawijaya.
Model United Nations (MUN) events are debates for students who are interested in current global issues and passionate about history and geography. Contestants represent a nation and defend that country’s position on a world issue, sharpening their public speaking skills and learning to think on their feet while answering questions from other delegates.
