Lenten Reflection: Punctuation Marks

Lenten Reflection: Punctuation Marks

Punctuation marks, even when they seem so small, can make a big difference. For example, the invitation to have a meal with a loved one such as ‘Let’s eat, mom’ is very different from when we miss putting a comma and write ‘Let’s eat mom’. The level of certainty varies between a question mark and a period with ‘I like you’. And the message of ‘I’m sorry I love you’ compared to ‘I’m sorry; I love you’ can change the dynamics of one’s relationship.

When it comes to God and especially duringthis Lent, we can ask ourself what punctuation marks apply with some sentimentswe may have. Do we believe with a period – certainty – or a question mark –doubt? Can we put a comma when we address the Lord, signifying that we are ableto talk with Him directly? If we say ‘I love you’ to Him, does it come with anellipsis indicating conditions on what He must fulfill so that we will reallylove Him (‘I love you if…) or omissions because we trail off and hide certainthings from our Creator?

This time is a unique period inviting us tolook at how we look at God. Do we truly believe Jesus is our Savior? Can wetrust in the Father’s providence despite our questions? What do we sincerely wantto say to God? Just a few more weeks into the Lenten Season and so we hope thateven just a little, this year will make a difference in how we know ourself andhow we know our efficient and final Cause.
