Lenten Reflection: Trending

In this day and age when most of us areimmersed in social media and other online platforms, the word ‘trending’ is initself a trend. While not always indicative of those which are reallyimportant, what we see in most-searched and most-used lists can give a glimpseof what draws our attention and what may have significance to a certain degree. In the end, though, we still have to be able to see why certain things seem tomatter more than others and how come popularity and fame can be such a formulathat particular individuals can use very well to their advantage.

If Jesus were alive today, we can wonder if He would be trending. Or perhaps, not even to have to imagine such a scenario, we can ask if during this Season of Lent, He and His story catch our attention and occupy our life and thoughts. Does someone offering His life for those He considered dearest not merit notice? Isn’t this true love worth tweeting, blogging, posting and reading about? What else does God need to do in order for Him to be given the same, if not more, awareness as other things we deem worthy?

The reality is trends do come and go. Especially in this day and age when everything can change fast and yesterday’s big news can easily be in today’s trash, we have to be able to choose where we put our minds and hearts to. For our time and present self will not be forever. And so these questions may merit some pondering: What’s trending in your life right now? Where is God in what’s trending with you? How can you be more mindful of what’s truly essential and lasting?
