Lenten Reflection: Balance

‘Balance’ may only be a seven-letter word but when taken seriously, can be very difficult to fulfill. From the simplest or playful tasks of balancing a tray full of food, finding the right tautness of a rubber band or maintaining a book on one’s head while walking straight to more important ones like providing equal time for work and family, finding a compromise for different persons in decision-making and allocating the right budget for all needs, good balance can be elusive. But it is necessary.

Jesus Himself navigated life, relationships and values. From narratives, we gather that He balanced time to be with His Father, to be alone and to be in the company of friends and acquaintances. We know from His very own prayer that He encouraged the invitation to humility and acceptance both in one’s own shortcomings as well as those of others when He said ‘forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sinned against us’. And we see Him weighing justice with compassion, experiencing pain and still allowing forgiveness, addressing concrete and urgent needs of the present while maintaining a view of what’s beyond.

Life may already be challenging enough and with the need to balance different facets of who we are, various responsibilities and desires, and several considerations at hand, it can become even more complicated. But we have a God who knows what we are going through. And more important than empathy, He has such deep love for us that bears the commitment to see us through our efforts, successes and even failures as we traverse our paths. As we reflect on these questions, may He remain a source of strength and reason to continue the many balancing acts we have to do: Which parts of yourself and your life do you need to give more attention to and consider further? What are imbalances that you may have at present? How can you deepen rootedness in those that are truly important?
