Lenten Reflection: Last

Lenten Reflection: Last

In basketball, the last two minutes of the game may be very exciting. For students, the last days of school are often a push and pull of activities: having lighter load from classes that already finished while rushing to meet a few more requirements in others, saying goodbye to the familiar and welcoming the new that’s next to come, having one foot in what’s current while already stepping into the future. Every new year’s eve, the last seconds of the outgoing year can be filled with much nostalgia and hope. Last things often have a different significance.

We are on the last week of Lent for 2024. If we follow Christ’s journey, this time reminds us of His last days. And if we allow ourself to believe and to be one with Him, we know that His lasts are our firsts. His last walk carrying the cross is our first experience of someone truly bearing our pains for us. His last words are our first witness and inspiration of what it means to be powerful and strong yet humble and kind. His last moments are our first, and only, pathway to salvation and heaven.

We know the story of His suffering and sacrifice, His pain and glory, His surrender and triumph. All of these were for us, His beloved. And in the end, up to His very last breath, we were first in Jesus’ eyes. We can then wonder and reflect on: When we get to our last moments, what life would we have lived? At present, what do we give for God? How many of our firsts, middles and lasts is the Lord included in?
