School of Humanities alumni among awardees for Gawad CCP Para sa Sining 2024

24 May 2024

The School of Humanities is proud to announce that some of its esteemed student and teacher alumni have been chosen to receive the prestigious Gawad CCP Para sa Sining 2024, the highest award given by the Cultural Center of the Philippines to artists or groups of artists in dance, music, theater, film and broadcast arts, literature, visual arts, architecture, and allied arts and design. This year's honorees have made significant contributions to various fields in the arts, enriching the cultural landscape of the Philippines.

Jose F. Lacaba (studied for the AB in English, last enrolled in 1965), a renowned poet, essayist, screenwriter, and journalist, is to receive the award for his outstanding works in Philliterature. One of the “bagay” poets, he contributed significantly to the development of the country's literary scene.

Miguel "Mike" De Leon (AB Humanities, 1967), a multifaceted artist, is being honored for his outstanding works as a director, writer, producer, and cinematographer. His contributions have played a crucial role in advancing the filmmaking industry in the Philippines.

Gino Gonzales (AB Communication, 1995), production designer, is to be recognized for his innovative use of non-conventional materials, experimentation with space, and promotion of the Philippine terno. His work has been instrumental in shaping the country's visual arts landscape. Gino was a faculty member and consultant in the early years of the Department of Fine Arts.

Additionally, two other notable alumni are to receive the Gawad CCP: Jose Iñigo Homer "Joey" Ayala (AB Economics, Ateneo de Davao), a composer, songwriter, and singer, known for popularizing the use of indigenous musical instruments in contemporary music; and Maria Lea Carmen Salonga (studied BS Biology in Ateneo), vocalist and actor, known for her achievements both nationally and internationally in musical theater.

The School of Humanities is honored to have had these talented individuals as part of its community. Their achievements serve as a testament to the university's commitment to fostering artistic excellence and cultural enrichment. Congratulations!
