ASOG participates in Philippine OGP Week, spearheads Public Participation for Better Health Outcomes

"Open Gov Week is a pivotal platform for global collaboration, rallying stakeholders to tackle pressing challenges and seize opportunities in open government. This year’s theme, "Open Gov Week 2024: Meet the Moment. Raise Ambition. Rise to the Challenge," builds on the Open Government Partnership’s (OGP) 2023-2028 strategy.

The 2024 Philippine Open Gov Week focuses on ambitious reforms and critical challenges across sectors. The focus centers on engaging dialogues and knowledge-sharing sessions that aim to foster transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in governance processes.

For World No Tobacco Day 2024, the Ateneo School of Government, in collaboration with the Department of Budget and Management, facilitated the session, "Public Participation for Better Health Outcomes," an in-person event where stakeholders including government, civil society, policy experts, and more convened to raise the ambition of reforms in policy areas crucial for open governance.

During the session, the speakers introduced the participants to the different aspects of public participation and their roles in enhancing the effectiveness of public health interventions. Atty. Clarissa Bautista, the point of contact for OGP in the Philippines, provided a brief overview into OGP. Afterwards, Ms. Aurora Chavez-de Guzman, co-chairperson of the PH-OGP National Steering Committee, emphasized the critical role of civil society participation. Finally, Director Rodley Carza of the Department of Health's Health Promotion Bureau shared about the intended public health outcomes of the National Tobacco Prevention and Control Strategy (NTPCS) 2030.

The main component of the event is a brainstorming activity facilitated by former DBM Asec. Ms. Tanya Hamada and former DOH Usec. Dr. Madeleine De Rosas-Valera. The stakeholders deliberated on how the NTPCS 2030 could be further advanced, even beyond the scope of public health. The event culminated in a declaration of the participants' commitment to the PH-OGP."
