At the 2024 Dalisayan: Ateneo College Awards in the Arts held on 13 June 2024, 19 seniors from Higher Education were recognized for their outstanding work in the arts during their time as students of the university. These student-artists excelled across different artforms: dance, theater arts, music, creative writing, and visual arts.

Formerly known as the Loyola Schools Awards in the Arts, the Ateneo College Awards in the Arts continues the university’s rich tradition of forming and nurturing artists and their endeavors. “Today, our recipients of the Awards in the Arts step into that rich tradition of creativity,” said former Dean of the School of Humanities Dr Jonathan Chua. Previous winners of the Dalisayan have gone on to make significant contributions in the fields of creative writing, theater, music, visual arts, graphic design, and film.

A special award was also given to two renowned artists—the filmmaker Laurice Guillen and the sculptor Agnes Arellano, both of whom are also alumni of Ateneo—for their exceptional work in the humanities. Their citations were read by Dr Alvin B Yapan from the Department of Filipino and Ms Ma Victoria T Herrera of the Ateneo Art Gallery. Guillen was a recipient of the Tanglaw ng Lahi Award in 2006 along with Marilou Diaz-Abaya, while Arellano has been exhibited by the Ateneo Art Gallery as well as the Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings.

Closing the awarding ceremonies was Dr Maria Luz C Vilches, who in her message said: “Through music, theater arts, and the visual arts, we can communicate to specific audiences our insights, emotions, commentaries on social issues, critical convictions, our own bodies, ourselves more accurately and more acutely, and with greater impact. Such artistic expressions have been excellently demonstrated in the works and experiences of Ms Laurice Guillen and Ms Agnes Arellano for we are honored to have accorded them tonight with the recognition they most deserve.”

To the awardees, she continued: “Many congratulations to all 19 of you, for proceeding with passion, for your ingenuity, boldness and adventure in letting your talent shine and grasp you with delight. The arts have a unique way of educating the heart. Here in Ateneo de Manila, education of the heart is an essential component of what it means to be an Atenean.”
