Ateneo School of Government engages with La Union provincial government for Tobacco Control Initiative

22 Oct 2024

Good Health and Well-being

On 15 October 2024, the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG), through the Ateneo Policy Center (APC), conducted a significant courtesy call at the Office of the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU). This visit was made possible through the dedicated coordination efforts of the Partnership for Health, Nation Building, and Socioeconomic Upliftment, Inc. (PNBI), which plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration between ASOG and the Office of the Provincial Governor. The PGLU delegation included Engr Robert L Leilina, Acting Assistant Provincial Administrator, and Dr Herminigildo Velasco, Provincial Health Officer II of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of La Union.

The engagement served as a vital platform for ASOG to present a comprehensive learning opportunity aimed at enhancing local governance in tobacco control. ASOG representatives emphasized the importance of equipping local leaders with practical tools and resources that can be seamlessly integrated into their existing practices. This initiative is part of ASOG’s broader mission to foster effective leadership and good governance across various sectors, particularly in health-related areas.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the discussion on how local government units (LGUs) in La Union can adopt and modify ASOG’s proposed strategies to fit the unique needs and contexts of their communities. By focusing on practical, actionable frameworks, ASOG aims to empower local leaders to address the pressing issues of tobacco use and its health implications effectively. The collaborative effort seeks not only to improve health outcomes but also to strengthen community engagement in tobacco control initiatives.

In addition to discussing the capacity-building program, the meeting also explored potential synergies among ASOG, PNBI and the PGLU. Both parties expressed enthusiasm about entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize their partnership, which would pave the way for sustained collaboration on health governance and policy development. This formal agreement will outline the roles and responsibilities of each party, ensuring a clear framework for implementing the proposed initiatives.

The anticipation for the upcoming project is palpable, with plans to launch during the fourth quarter of this year. This initiative is expected to include workshops, training sessions, and resource-sharing activities that will not only enhance the capacity of local leaders but also engage community stakeholders in the fight against tobacco use. By fostering a collaborative environment, ASOG, PNBI and PGLU aim to create a sustainable impact on public health in La Union.

As the conversation around tobacco control continues to evolve, this partnership represents a significant step towards creating healthier communities in the region. The commitment from all parties signals a shared dedication to improving public health outcomes through informed policy-making and effective governance.
