Co-presented with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, sadopitnA: Antípodas o sea, flamenco puesto del revés y boca abajo (Antipodes or flamenco, turned upside down and upside down) comes to the Ateneo Art Gallery this 20 November Wednesday. The opening will be marked by a special performance by Niño de Elche, Emilio Caracafé and participants of Elche’s masterclass at 4pm.

Originally commissioned for the 24th Biennale of Sydney, the work by Spanish artists Pedro G. Romero (b.1964) and Niño de Elche (b.1985) examines postcolonialism through the use of flamenco music. Deriving its title from the word “antipodes,” or points on the Earth that are diametrically opposed to one another, the artists trace Spain’s colonial history through various galleon trade routes, linking different cultures by presenting a collection of nine songs and compositions played through wooden speakers wrapped in “mantones,” or Manila shawls. The mantones represent a hybrid commodity of Spanish culture and colonial trade

The exhibit will be on view from 20 November 2024 to 16 February 2025 at the Ateneo Art Gallery, UGF The Foyer, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté.
