AIPO and DOST-NCR collaborate to promote intellectual property awareness among MSMEs

The Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) together with the Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) conducted a webinar on the overview of Intellectual Property (IP) essentials for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative is part of DOST-NCR's effort to reintroduce itself as a vital support institution within the Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) network, emphasizing its role in fostering innovation and technological advancement.

The webinar was conducted on 18 November 2024 (Monday), from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm via Zoom, and was attended by over 27 participants from various MSMEs. The session aimed to equip attendees with a foundational knowledge of intellectual property and its strategic applications to drive enterprise growth.

The webinar covered essential topics, including an overview of the intellectual property system in the Philippines and its importance; the different types of intellectual property protection; practical examples and applications of IPs to enterprises; and best practices and strategies for protecting IP. These topics were discussed by Ms Madielaine Fatallo and Ms Vanessa Malapit from the Protection and Education Group of AIPO. The discussion provided detailed insights into how intellectual property protection can be utilized to safeguard innovations emphasizing their importance for MSMEs.

Additionally, Mr Bryan James Erfe, Business Development Officer from AIPO, provided an in-depth discussion on the nuances of IP commercialization. He explained the critical processes involved in transforming intellectual property into valuable business assets, offering practical strategies for leveraging IP to drive innovation, create competitive advantages, and unlock new revenue streams. His presentation included real-world examples and actionable insights, equipping participants with the knowledge needed to maximize the potential of their intellectual property for sustainable business growth

The session underscored the importance of intellectual property for MSMEs, particularly in leveraging innovation to remain competitive in dynamic markets. Participants expressed appreciation for the practical strategies shared during the webinar, which they can apply in managing and commercializing their intellectual assets.

This collaborative effort between AIPO and DOST-NCR reflects their shared commitment to empowering MSMEs with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in a knowledge-driven economy.
