Ateneo Math majors win Stat-is-Eeks 2024

Two teams of math majors took home the top two prizes in the 35th Annual Stat-Is-Eeks held last 23 November 2024 at the School of Statistics Auditorium at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

The team composed of Sted Micah Cheng (4 BS AMDSc), Clarence James Monterozo (4 BS AMDSc), and Francine Tarrazona (4 BS AMDSc) emerged as champion in the said competition, while the team composed of Karl Chester Galapon (3 BS AMDSc), Aames Juriel Morales (3 BS AMDSc), and Patricia Angelica Tan (3 BS AMDSc) took home second place. A third team from Ateneo, composed of Deanne Gabrielle Algenio (3 BS AMDSc), Vince Dexter Ang (3 BS AMDSc), and Jose Maria Bernardo II (3 BS AMF), also made it to the final round of the said competition.

Sted also emerged as the individual top scorer during the contest’s written elimination round.

Stat-Is-Eeks is a nationwide inter-university statistics quiz for non-statistics majors organized by the UP Statistical Society. The contest is part of the organization’s efforts to further its mission of promoting the field of statistics and enhancing people’s interest in it. Contest questions involved both conceptual and problem solving questions from topics such as descriptive statistics, probability and mathematical statistics, and inferential statistics.

The students were coached by Dr Christian Chan Shio, faculty member from the Ateneo Department of Mathematics.
