Ateneo de Manila University was recognized at the recently-held Internationalization Champions of Nation Building and Sustainability (ICONS) Awards 2024 for its significant contributions to global excellence and sustainable development. Organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through its International Affairs Service (IAS), the prestigious event took place on December 16, 2024, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

The ICONS Awards celebrate Philippine Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) that demonstrate exceptional leadership in internationalization, sustainability, and regional development.

In 2024, Ateneo achieved the following standings:

  • Quacquarelli-Symonds World University Ranking: 516
  • Quacquarelli-Symonds Asia University Ranking: 142
  • Times Higher Education World University Ranking: 1001-1200
  • Times Higher Education Asia University Ranking: 401-500
  • Times Higher Education Impact Ranking: 201-300

Ateneo’s outstanding performance in the Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), and World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) emphasizes its global excellence, further solidifying its position as the country’s top private institution.

Present at the event were leaders and stakeholders in higher education, including ambassadors, education attachés, representatives from local and international partner institutions, and private sector collaborators.

Dr. Maria Luz C. Vilches, VP for Higher Education, and Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, University President

Ateneo was represented by University President Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, and Vice President for Higher Education Dr. Maria Luz C. Vilches. Their presence underscored the university’s continued commitment to education reform, research excellence, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Ateneo’s recognition at the ICONS Awards 2024 reaffirms its commitment to excellence, internationalization, and sustainability. Moving forward, the university aims to further academic excellence and expand international collaborations, continuing its role in shaping education’s transformative impact on society and sustainable development for future generations.

In an article about the 2024 THE World Rankings, Fr. Bobby said “I would like to congratulate everyone in the university – all of our academic and non-academic personnel, students, and all of our other stakeholders and partners – for a job well done” and “and as I always say: these rankings are only guideposts in our journey as a University. So today we celebrate, and let us make this piece of good news an additional source of inspiration as we continue to work to be a force for good in the world.”
