Conversations on Service: Engaging Fr Arrupe's Call Today

To commemorate the call of Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ for graduates of Jesuit institutions to be "persons-for-others", we are launching the video series "Conversations on Service: Engaging Fr Arrupe's Call Today."

We often hear people ask if there’s still hope for the Philippines. The persons featured in this video series are living manifestations that there is still hope in the country. And these persons carry the torch of hope in diverse fields: social entrepreneurship, advertising, manufacturing, finance, insurance, environment, corporate foundations, and NGOs.

The videos feature different ways of being persons-for-and-with-others today. Release of the videos spilled over to 2025 and now we find ourselves in the midst of the Jubilee of Hope. The timing of the release is appropriate because it is through the service of those who were interviewed that we find hope in our midst.

All of the interviewees, save one, are graduates of Ateneo de Manila University. The only interviewee who was not a graduate of Ateneo de Manila is Fr Ben Nebres SJ, former president of the University and current trustee of Gawad Kalinga. Fr Ben was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences 50 years ago and he was responsible for establishing several of the social development institutions at Ateneo de Manila including the NGOs housed at the Social Development Complex and the Office for Social Concern and Involvement. Fifty years later, we asked him once again what he thinks it means to be a person for others today.

These are but some of the stories of hope and there are many more among the graduates of the institution. May we never tire of sharing stories of hope with each other.
