On 5 March 2025, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) successfully conducted an Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness Session focused on trademarks. This online event attracted a diverse audience from the Ateneo community and beyond, with a total of 140 attendees, aiming to enhance their understanding of trademark protection.

The session featured Atty Joan Janneth Estremadura, an esteemed alumna of the Ateneo Law School and is currently an Attorney IV at the Bureau of Trademarks, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). With her extensive expertise in IP law, Atty Estremadura shared practical insights on how trademarks help protect brand identity and set businesses apart in the marketplace.

The speaker guided the participants through the trademark registration process with IPOPHL, explaining key steps such as conducting a trademark search, filing an application, and maintaining trademark rights. She also pointed out common mistakes applicants make and offered tips to navigate the system more effectively, ensuring stronger and more secure trademark protection.

Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of trademark protection, particularly for businesses, startups, and creative industries. The discussion was enriched with real-world examples and best practices for securing and enforcing trademark rights, equipping attendees with practical knowledge on navigating the trademark system effectively.

This session is part of AIPO’s ongoing commitment to fostering a robust IP culture within the community, ensuring that individuals and organizations recognize the value of protecting their intellectual assets.

Through initiatives like this, AIPO reaffirms its dedication to building an environment where intellectual property rights are respected and utilized for economic and creative growth. The office looks forward to hosting more educational sessions that empower individuals and businesses in their IP journey.
