Empowering kapitbahayan: A new chapter for GK Kalayaan village

Pevee Carandang of GK-Ateneo sharing a message of solidarity in GK Kalayaan, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija

On 22 March 2025, Gawad Kalinga (GK) Kalayaan Village in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija, hosted a significant event that marked a new chapter for 128 families. Six new family beneficiaries were awarded houses, while 122 families renewed their Community Kasunduan, highlighting the enduring spirit of community and empowerment that GK embodies. This momentous occasion was led by the new Project Director, Victor Dacumos, together with the GK Kalayaan Officers, and was facilitated by representatives from the local government unit (LGU) headed by the Honorable Mayor Atty Jobby Emata.

From L-R: Atty Jobby Emata (Mayor of Gabaldon, NE), Victor Dacumos (GK Project Director), Hon Vergel Bartolome (Brgy Captain of Brgy. Tagumpay) and other representatives from the barangay and LGU during the event

The awarding of houses at GK Kalayaan Village was more than just the distribution of certificates; It was a celebration of empowerment, community, and the shared hopes and dreams of the Kapitbahayan (KBs). The renewal of the Community Kasunduan, a social contract that defines the rights and responsibilities of each community member, reaffirmed the residents’ commitment to the values of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual support that form the foundation of the GK community.

One of the most inspiring stories from the event was that of the Furuc family. Sales and Deborah Furuc, who had been part of the GK Kalayaan community for 17 years. They made the selfless decision to give up their GK unit so that another family in need could benefit from it. In a heartfelt letter, they expressed their deep gratitude to GK for teaching them the value of saving and the courage to pursue their dreams. Their journey, from being beneficiaries to becoming homeowners outside the GK village, is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of the GK program and a moving reminder of the potential for lasting change.

The Furuc family’s story is a shining example of how GK empowers its members to achieve their dreams and give back to the community. Even after moving out of the village, they pledged to continue their involvement with GK as volunteers, demonstrating their deep commitment and embodying the spirit of bayanihan that GK fosters. Stories like that of the Furuc family inspire us to believe in the power of collective effort and the possibility of a brighter future for all.

Deborah Furuc stands as a symbol of gratitude and generosity, giving back to the community that once gave to her

The success of GK Kalayaan Village is a testament to the collective efforts of its residents and their unwavering commitment to helping one another. The empowerment of the Kapitbahayan in GK Kalayaan Village is not just a beacon of hope but a model of community-driven development that we can all be proud of. As new families move into their homes and the community continues to grow, the mission of ending the cycle of poverty for millions of Filipinos lives on, and we are all part of this inspiring journey.

Together, we build not just houses, but dreams and futures, empowering every Kapitbahayan to transform our community into an inspiration of hope and progress.
