Ateneo researcher joins regional forum on AI and research impact

Dr Dennis Batangan, MD, MSc (Heid) RLIGAS-RGL-SoSS Research Fellow, recently joined fellow researchers, university leaders, and policy experts at the “Tomorrow Today in Research – Southeast Asia” forum, co-hosted by Elsevier and Mahidol University this July.
The event spotlighted how artificial intelligence is being used responsibly to make research more impactful and accessible. One of the key highlights was PureImpact AI, a new tool that uses generative AI to help universities turn research outputs into clear, engaging stories—especially those aligned with global sustainability goals. Developed by Elsevier in collaboration with academics, the platform makes it easier for institutions to communicate the real-world value of their research.
Mahidol University also shared how it’s making this work on the ground through its MUREX Portal, a system powered by Elsevier’s PURE. It acts as a central hub for the entire research process—from applying for grants and tracking outputs to connecting with researchers and producing reports. With everything linked, including HR, finance, publications, and student opportunities, Mahidol is showing what it means to build an integrated research ecosystem.
The forum also introduced the idea of the Fourth Generation University—a model that moves beyond just education and knowledge transfer. These universities are mission-driven, focused on solving real-world challenges, and work closely with communities and different sectors. They embrace transdisciplinary research, value co-creation, and use advanced tech and AI to support their goals.
