In a move to further strengthen its innovation and intellectual property capabilities, Samsung R&D Institute Philippines (SRPH) partnered with the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) to conduct a Patent Searching and Drafting Workshop for the SRPH employees. The workshop sessions were held on 24 and 26 June, and 8 and 10 July 2025, at the Samsung corporate office in Science Hub Tower, McKinley Hill, Taguig City.

The workshop catered to SRPH employees, the majority of whom are software engineers involved in the development of innovative technologies. The workshop aimed to strengthen the participants’ understanding of the Philippine IP system, focusing on patent protection and strategic patent drafting.

The first session, led by Ms Madielaine Fatallo, Research Officer III at AIPO, introduced participants to the fundamentals of the Philippine IP landscape and emphasized the importance of patents in safeguarding technological innovations

On the second day, Dr Proceso Fernandez Jr, AIPO Director, provided an in-depth presentation on patent searching techniques. Participants were trained to effectively navigate major patent databases, including Espacenet, WIPO Patentscope, and others. Through hands-on activities, they gained practical experience in identifying prior art and existing technologies—a critical skill in evaluating the patentability of their inventions.

The third and fourth sessions focused on analyzing prior art and drafting patent claims. Participants were guided through the structure of strong patent documentation and engaged in practical exercises to draft preliminary patent claims based on their technical work. These activities provided valuable insight into the legal and technical aspects of patent drafting, strengthening their ability to document and protect innovative outputs.

The collaboration between AIPO and Samsung R&D Institute Philippines reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation through education and capacity building in IP. By empowering professionals with the tools and knowledge to navigate the patent system, both institutions contribute to a stronger, innovation-driven economy.
