AHS ’64 1-D donors establish Fr William H Kreutz SJ Endowment Fund for Ateneo High School

In a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and generosity, members of Ateneo High School Class of 1964 (1-D) and friends of Fr William H "Bill" Kreutz SJ, have established the AHS ’64 1-D Fr William H Kreutz SJ Endowment Fund to support scholarships for deserving Ateneo High School students.

The initiative was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed on 12 September 2025 at the Ateneo de Manila University's Loyola Heights campus. Representing the donors as signatory was Mr Aurelio R “Gigi” Montinola III, a member of AHS '64 Section 1-D, while the University was represented by Fr Roberto C Yap SJ, University President.

Aside from being the class moderator 1-D, Fr Kreutz taught Latin and English Literature to his class. This endowment is both a tribute to Fr Kreutz—beloved teacher, mentor, and former President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University—and a way for his former students and friends to “pay it forward” by providing access to Jesuit education for future generations.

Fr Kreutz is widely credited with initiating the tradition of providing scholarships at Ateneo de Manila College, opening doors for generations of young people to pursue education regardless of financial capacity. His lifelong belief in the transformative power of education continues to guide this effort. “Scholarships change lives,” Fr Kreutz has often said. “They make a difference not only for the student, but for their families, their communities, and ultimately, the country.”

The initial amount of ₱5,400,000.00 will create a perpetual fund whose yearly earnings will provide a full or partial tuition and fees scholarship for at least one deserving student who demonstrates great financial need. Any additional earnings will be added to the fund principal, ensuring its sustainability and growth for years to come.

“The AHS ’64 1-D Fr William H Kreutz, SJ Endowment Fund directly supports our goal of making an Ateneo education accessible to all who qualify, regardless of economic means,” said Fr Yap. “Through this initiative, the legacy of Fr. Kreutz will continue to inspire, forming young people who will, like him, dedicate their lives to service, leadership, and love for country.”

The MOA signing was witnessed by representatives of AHS ’64 and friends of Fr Kreutz: Rod Lejano, JA Patag, Paulie Reyes, Tito Chan, Lala Fernando-Reyes, Mia Fernando-Cameron, Bong Montes, Nonoy Ibanez, and Ms Bernadine T Siy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ateneo de Manila University.

Representing the University were Fr William H Kreutz SJ; Fr Jose Mari Joaquin "Jonjee" C Sumpaico III SJ, Vice President for Basic Education; Ms Genalyn Sanvictores, Principal of Ateneo de Manila Junior High School; Ms Rosanna "Sansan" Borja, Principal of Ateneo Senior High School; Fr Raymund Benedict Q "RB" Hizon SJ, Director of the Office of University Development and Alumni Affairs (OUDAA); Ms Janette A "Jeng" Manglallan, Donor Relations Head of OUDAA; and Dojo Sison.

The Office of Admission and Aid of the Ateneo High School will manage the scholarship and provide annual reports to the donors on the scholar’s academic performance and the status of the fund.

This gift strengthens Ateneo’s commitment to inclusivity and access to quality Jesuit education. It is also a testament to the enduring bond between Ateneo and its alumni, who continue to give back and contribute to the University’s mission of forming persons-for-others.
