In this ArtSpeak session, professor and historian Ambeth Ocampo will explore the life and work of Fernando Zóbel—visual artist, art collector, and founding donor of the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG). A notable figure in the Philippine modernist movement, Zóbel is known for his experimentations in non-objective art. Some of his most notable works include his Saetas (in which he used a surgical syringe to apply fine lines of paint), Serie Negra (which was influenced by calligraphy), and Dialogos (abstract reconstructions of select museum paintings). His personal collection—donated to Ateneo in batches between 1959 and 1969—includes works by artists who have significantly shaped the Philippine modern and contemporary art scene. Last September 2024, AAG opened the exhibition “A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene” in celebration of Zóbel’s birth centennial.
This ArtSpeak session was organized in line with “A Synergy of Ventures: The Postwar Art Scene,” featuring the Fernando Zóbel donation, on view from 15 September 2024 to 28 February 2025 at the UGF Ateneo Art Gallery, Mr & Mrs Ching Tan Gallery and Mr & Mrs Chung Te Gallery, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.
