In an ode to its commitment to innovation and creativity, Areté officially launches KICKSPARK: A Christmas Tree Challenge -- an open call to designers and artists of all ages to reimagine the traditional Christmas tree as a call for social and systemic change, while serving as a symbol of hope amid the country’s current economic and political challenges.

The KICKSPARK Challenge is an invitation to embody the spirit of the season founded upon the virtues of togetherness and reflection. A key requirement in designing these inspirational trees is to include an element of audience participation in the final design. This can range from simple gestures, such as hanging ornaments together, to more introspective activities like writing wishes or inspiring collective action among visitors.

After all, liberation is not a solitary act but a community-wide initiative, achieved through shared effort and solidarity. This spirit of communal interaction and unity is what the challenge hopes to nurture and celebrate.

The mechanics of this year’s challenge support Areté’s 2025 Christmas theme, “Mapagpalayang Pasko” (A Liberating Christmas).

I.  Mechanics & Submission Requirements

  1. The challenge is open to individuals of all ages who can comply with submitting their actual prototype at Areté.
  2. Participants must submit a mock-up of their Christmas tree, measuring 12 inches tall.
  3. Acceptable materials include, but are not limited to: wood, clay, cardboard, recycled materials, and 3D-printed components.
  4. Participants are welcome to utilize the tools and equipment available at the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Makerspace (Please email arete+makerspace@ateneo.edu to schedule a visit and inquire about any applicable fees.)

II.  All submissions must include

  1. Uploaded copy of the final design study
  2. A brief 1-minute video showcasing the design and prototyping process (from conceptualization to final output)
  3. Submission of this Google Form
  4. The actual 12-inch prototype, to be delivered to Areté's Office of the Artistic Director (Boysen Room), 3/F Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University

III.  Selection Criteria

  1. Entries will be evaluated by a selection panel based on the following:
  2. Originality and interpretation of theme
  3. Innovation and design execution
  4. Embodiment of the Christmas spirit

IV.  Recognition

  • Shortlisted entries will be featured in Areté's Ubuntu Space to highlight the diversity and creativity of this year’s interpretations of Mapagpalayang Pasko.
  • A special surprise for the winner will be unveiled during Areté’s Noel Concert on December 13, 2025.

V.  Key Dates to Remember

  • Submission Deadline: November 15, 2025
  • Exhibition Opening: November 20, 2025 at the Ubuntu Space, Areté
  • Announcement of Winner: December 13, 2025 during Areté’s annual Noel Concert

Through the creative reimagining of something as traditional and iconic as the Christmas tree, Areté provides a platform to demonstrate how art and design can inspire meaningful social impact and foster collective reflection within the community.
